Unbelievers: Snakes in Sheep Clothing

“In Allah let the Faithful put their trust.”
Al-Imran 3:122

I’m going to talk about the unbelievers.  Those who pretend to stand among the faithful but who really do not believe.  We all know people like this.  They are usually arrogant and full of pride more than willing to tell you how wonderful they are without you asking.  They walk with their heads held high and their chests puffed out and they’ll tell you anything they think you want to hear.  wheatThey’ll like right to your face without even batting an eye and think nothing of it.  They are quick to point out the faults and shortcomings of others but they see no fault in their own character as they think they are perfect and can do no wrong.  Of course nothing is ever their fault and it is always the fault of others too.  The lie, cheat, steal, and deceive and they have no real compassion for others without an ulterior motive.  They are always seeking for what they can get and what is to their advantage.  They are beyond self righteous and they are quick to point out the sins of others.  These people are double minded, two faced.  They are deceivers and the mere fact that they engage in deception makes them followers of Iblis, the devil, for they do his dirty work!

Al-Baqara is the second Sura of the Qur’an and in the opening verses it speaks of these very kind of people.  Beginning in the sixth verse it tells us that whether we warn them or not it doesn’t matter because they won’t believe and they aren’t going to.  It says:

“Surely thosse who disbelieve,
it being alike to them whether you warn them,
or do not warn them, will not believe.”
Sura 2:6

Such people are not going to believe whether we warn them or not because they don’t think they are wrong, about anything.  They don’t think they sin.  They see nothing wrong with their deception of others or with the lies they constantly tell.  To borrow from the Bible teachings, these people are quick to see the speck in the eye of others but they cannot see the log in their own eye.  They are blind, deaf, and dumb spiritually and mentally.

Beginning in verse 7 this is explained to us as why they think they do no wrong.  It says that God has set a “seal upon their hearts, and upon their hearing and their is a covering over their eyes.”  It goes on to say that great punishment awaits these people come the Day of Judgment.  Allah only increses their darkness and blindness along with their ignorance and such people really are ignorant by choice.  Their hearts are cold and that is why they have no compassion for others.  They are incapable of showing real compassion for others unless there is something for them to gain.  Everything is always about them and if they have nothing to gain in any situation then they are not interested nor do they care.  Today we might call these people “sociopathic” but from a religious point of view they follow the wrong path and they incur Allah’s wrath because they are gone astray and they love being astray.  They have no intention of going onto the right path because they don’t think they are doing anything wrong!

When there is talk of religion and God these people will always say they believe.  But they really do not believe and their actions prove it.  You cannot be arrogant and steeped in self pride and really believe in God.  You can not run all about deceiving others and lying to them and truly believe in Allah!  Such people some call “snakes” and, indeed, they are Snakes and not to be trusted.  As I mentioned earlier they will tell you anything they THINK you want to hear and if they think you want to hear that they believe then they’ll tell you so even though they really do not believe at all.  And they certainly do not think Allah will ever hold them to account for anything as they see themselves as innocent beyond imagination.

“And there are some who say, We believe in Allah and the Last Day,
and they are not at all Believers!”
Sura 2:8

Such people as this are trying to deceive both Allah and themselves as well as those who really do believe.  Yet, as the Qur’an says in verse 9 “..they do not perceive it.”  They THINK they believe.  They THINK they are on the Straight Path.  They THINK they are going to enter into Paradise when they die because they THINK they have done no wrong.  They see nothing wrong with their egotism, deceptions, or lies and they THINK Allah does not see them doing these things either.  They could not be more mistaken.

“There is a disease in their hearts,
so Allah added to their disease and they shall have a painful punishment
because they lied.”
Sura 2:10

Right here in the above verse the Qur’an tells us exactly what is wrong with these people.  They have a disease in their hearts.  The heart is often symbolic of the human soul and what this verse means is that such people suffer from a sickness and corruption in their own souls.  They lovingly walk the wrong path with glee and so what does God do?  He only increases their darkness since they love darkness so much.  Meanwhile, they only anger Allah because they are liars!

Such people love to make mischief and trouble everywhere they go.  And when they succeed in this they become wide-eyed and you can see the anticipation written all over their faces.  They love to start trouble then sit back and watch as if they get off on it or something.  Such people are deceivers, liars, and trouble-makers as we discover in verse 11.

“And when it is said to them,
Do not make mischief in the land,
they say,
We are but peace-makers.”
Sura 2:11

But they are NOT peace-makers at all because, in fact, they are trouble-makers.  Verse 12 tells us that they do not even perceive this!  They do not see themselves as trouble-makers at all because their own self righteousness and egotism blinds them.  Nothing they do do they think is evil and everything they do do they think is right.  They seek to deceive others yet they are the ones that are truly deceived and they don’t even realize it.  This is why no matter what trouble they start in any situation they think nothing is ever their fault and they’ve always got an answer for it all being the fault of someone else.  Not only are they egotistical deceiving liars but they are also ignorant of their own selves and their own behavior.  And when you try to wake them up to this they are not interested as they do not think their is anything wrong with them or their behavior.

Such people in rare moments of honesty will show their true colors when you tell them they should believe as true believers believe.  They will tell you something like, “Shall we believe as fools believe?” as pointed out in verse 13.  They do not realize that it is really they themselves who are the real fools.  Their’s is a sad lot!  Their’s is a woeful punishment come Judgment!

Such people PRETEND to believe in Allah and the Last Day but they really do not believe at all.  They love it when you put your trust in them instead of Allah and they especially love it when you praise them instead of Allah as it boosts up their already overgrown egos even more.  They love to hear how good, right, and handsome they are!  When they are among the faithful they claim to believe even though they are not.  Again, they will tell you anything they THINK you want to hear.  But, “…when they are alone with ther Shaitans (Satan, devils, demons), they say:  Surely we are with you, we were only mocking (the Faithful)” as stated in verse 14.  And mocking the faithful is, indeed, really what they are doing and guess what?  When they get alone or with others of their kind they laugh about it!  They love to mock the faithful endlessly and they do it all the time even in the face of the True Beleiver!

Finally, in verse 15 we learn what Allah does with such people as this.  It says this:

“Allah shall pay them back (for) their mockery,
and He leaves them alone in their inordinancy,
blindly wandering on”
Sura 2:15

These people are walking the wrong path and of that there is no doubt.  Their true goal is to mock the truly faithful and to cause division and doubt among the believers.  They seek to cause trouble and confusion.  This is the devil’s work.  This is why we must be aware of these people and they are not hard to spot.  And this is also why we must pray for them.  Pray that someday Allah may wake them up to their evil so that they might really become one of the truly faithful.  God created us all and He wishes that no soul be lost.  It is important to pray for these people but it is also very important to not fall victim to their lies, deceptions, trouble-making, and mockery.  They are people who wander blindly all about never realizing that it is they who are in the greatest error (sin).  It is they who would cast the first stone because they think they are perfect and without sin.  They could not be more mistaken as “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” as the biblical message teaches.  Most importantly we should NOT put our trust in such people or anyone for that matter as our trust belongs in Allah and in God alone.
